Literacy Intervention and Orton-Gillingham
Structured, multisensory literacy intervention using Orton-Gillingham methods and a carefully sequenced scope and sequence. Students typically make one to two grade levels of progress over six to eight months, depending on their starting point and needs.
Who it's for
Students who are struggling with reading or writing, with or without a dyslexia diagnosis. Structured phonics instruction can benefit many students who have gaps in their foundational skills. It can also provide targeted support for students whose reading and writing difficulties are not fully explained by another learning difference.
The process
We begin with an assessment and start building a structured sequence around the specific sound-to-spelling patterns that are missing or not yet automatic. Lessons use multisensory practice to build understanding and recall, with targeted homework to reinforce new skills. Most students meet once or twice per week.
Standardized Test Preparation
SAT, ACT, ISEE (all levels), and SHSAT preparation that combines content instruction, targeted skill building, and test-taking strategy. Typical gains for my students have been +300 points on the SAT, +6 points on the ACT, and +3 stanines on the ISEE.
Who it's for
Students preparing for these exams, including students who test with accommodations. Preparation is most effective when we have enough time to address the underlying academic gaps revealed by the diagnostic.
The process
We begin with a full diagnostic and build a plan around what it reveals. Early sessions focus on the highest-yield gaps first, combining content instruction with test-taking strategies. Timed, full-length practice becomes more important once the underlying content is solid. Ideally, preparation begins about a year before the exam, though we can adjust the frequency and timeline based on the student's starting point and goals.
Academic Tutoring
Individualized support across elementary, middle, and high school subjects, including:
- Math: Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus
- Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics
- English, History, AP Psychology, Spanish, Mandarin
Who it's for
Students who need more individualized instruction than a large classroom can provide. We identify exactly what is getting in the way, reinforce current coursework, and address the underlying gaps that make new material harder to understand.
The process
We work to stay aligned with the student's schoolwork while filling in gaps and introducing tools or approaches that may work better for them. When possible, I communicate with teachers and families to keep everyone working toward the same goals. Depending on the student, tutoring might focus on one subject, span several subjects, include homework and exam preparation, or continue over multiple years.
Executive Function Coaching
Individualized support for the skills that make it possible to manage schoolwork effectively. This can happen alongside academic tutoring or as a standalone service. We identify which executive functioning skills are creating obstacles, then systematically test strategies and supports to find what works.
Who it's for
Students who understand the material but still miss deadlines, lose assignments, struggle to get started, or have difficulty managing multi-step tasks. This includes neurodivergent learners and students with processing or other challenges that affect how they manage academic demands.
The process
We start by identifying the specific skills and situations that are causing problems. Then we introduce changes one at a time, track what happens, and keep iterating until we find approaches that actually work for that student. Because executive functioning looks different from student to student, the goal is not to impose a universal system, but to build one that fits.
